Anthropology students from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas have found human artifacts including tools, teeth and bones that date back to 5000 BCE at Aquarena Center (Aquarena Springs). The study of the findings will give researchers insight into the behavior and activities of the early hunter gatherers that populated the area along the San Marcos river.

I have learned from personal experience that there are some who look down their noses at those who would mispronounce names of composers and musical terms. But given that the terminology of Western music borrows from practically every European language, I have yet to come across anyone who doesn’t make occasional small pronunciation errors. (more…)

Violinist Mari Kimura has been experimenting with the production of subharmonic notes on the violin, effectively lowering its range by one octave. Unlike normal harmonics, which are produced by a light finger pressure on the string, subharmonics are achieved by mastering a specific bow technique. (more…)

Every once in a while I enjoy scanning the Internet Archive for sights and sounds that have been uploaded and made available to the public domain. This morning I was pleased to find video footage of two of my favorite Russian-born violinists, Milstein and Kogan, as well as the Caruso and Scotti recording of “Sollene in Quest’ora” from Verdi’s La forza del destino. A photograph of Mozart’s widow, Constanze Weber has been discovered in Bavaria. The photograph is a copy of a Daguerrotype taken in 1840 when Weber was 78 years old. The photo was taken at the home of composer Max Keller, who is also visible in the photograph. View the photo and read more at news.bbc.co.uk.
