The Most and Least Dangerous US Cities

The Morgan Quitno Press released a list of 371 US cities rated from least to most dangerous. Atlanta is the 355th safest city, or the 17th most dangerous, depending on the way you look at it. The rankings are based on figures released in June of this year.

Neighboroo

Neighboroo is a web application that displays information maps (heatmaps) based on the trends of a particular region. I have wasted a considerable amount of time on the website looking at different cities I’ve visited. Take a look at the crime and air quality index maps of Atlanta.

Richard Tucker American Tenor

Last night I watched the Voice of Firestone: The Great Tenors DVD. I was familiar with most of the singers on the disc and I had heard Richard Tucker before, but I was floored by his performance of the Neopolitan medley. I really admire the darkness and depth of his voice. I couldn’t find any video of the medley, but here he is singing E Lucevan le Stelle from Tosca and another of Tucker singing a duet with Robert Merrill from La Forza del Destino.

Ivry Gitlis Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso

I love Ivry Gitlis’ version of the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-SaĆ«ns. The footage is from the Arthur Grumiaux DVD, where it is included as a bonus feature. When I got the disc I skipped right over the Grumiaux and went straight to this track. I think Gitlis’ brilliance is more than apparent in this clip, where his interpretation falls somewhere between pure genius and absolute madness. I particulary enjoy the out of control vibrato and his unique phrasing.

Library North

I have spent far too much time in the library the past few days. And even though I love the giant helvetica letters in the new quiet study room, I am looking forward to a nice weekend as far away from LN5 as I can possibly get.

This article about magic and superstition in baseball is a fun read.

The Rocket

Friday night we were at Turner Field for what may have been Roger Clemens final regular season start. We were able to watch him warm up in the bullpen, and then pitch six innings before tipping his hat to a standing ovation. I was honored to be there. I took a few photos, I like these.
