Poll finds leftist slant among young Americans. Duh. From the New York Times:
Young Americans are more likely than the general public to favor a government-run universal health care insurance system, an open-door policy on immigration and the legalization of gay marriage…
Is this anything new, or is it just that 17-29 year olds are becoming more informed and able to discuss political issues?

The new Beastie Boys record makes me want to grab the Stratocaster and head over to Brett’s garage. New video is Off the Grid.

New research shows that oldest siblings are more likely to have the highest I.Q.s. From the New York Times:
The eldest children in families tend to develop higher I.Q.’s than their siblings, researchers are reporting today, in a large study that could settle more than a half-century of scientific debate about the relationship between I.Q. and birth order.
I think the most accurate theory is that this phenomenon is not biological, but rather a result of the familial role performed by the firstborn - the eldest are often called upon to play the problem solver. And older children may also benefit from observing the behavior of their younger siblings.
What the world eats. An interesting photo essay at Time.com showing families around the world surrounded by all the food they eat in a week.
“As objects go, the knob is not as insignificant as it looks at first glance. It is, after all, what you grab when performing two of life’s most poignant acts - coming and going.” –Ralph Caplan

Since we returned from Guanajuato I have spent every morning looking for music from Mexico’s golden era. I started posting some of my favorites to my video blog this afternoon. I adore Lola Beltran singing Cucurrucucu Paloma, and the this clip of Toña La Negra accompanied by Agustín Lara proves that I was indeed born half a century too late and a thousand miles too far north.
The newest version of Firefox, which will be released to the public later this year, will contain new code intended to increase performance and strengthen browser security.
Researchers have sent a wi-fi signal 382 kilometers across the Andes. That’s 237 miles.

Safari for Windows? I don’t even know anyone who uses Safari on a Mac. I would try it, but I paid for QuickTime 6 Pro (and 5), and I am not ready to pay for version 7 yet.
Mashable lists 120+ RSS tools. I have been using Sage as my primary reader for a few years now, but maybe it’s time I checked out some of the other options. The list also includes RSS WP plugins, feed managers, ping tools and feed directories.

Vaimusic has posted two excerpts of my hero Nathan Milstein playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Walter Hendl.
There are many other great clips on the Vaimusic YouTube profile.
In this video, Bruce Sterling discusses hostile technology design and the need to “humanize the interface.”

I have spent far too much time in the library the past few days. And even though I love the giant helvetica letters in the new quiet study room, I am looking forward to a nice weekend as far away from LN5 as I can possibly get.
