The other night, without any prompting, my volume control suddenly wanted to adjust the microphone level instead of the speaker. Changing the device and track settings back to normal gave me no results. At this point, it was far easier and less frustrating to simply remove and reinstall the ALSA drivers.
In the terminal, I typed:
sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
Then, because for some reason the above also removed GNOME desktop manager:
sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop
