Phoenix HyperSpace

Phoenix Hyperspace is a lightweight operating system that can bypass Microsoft Windows altogether and access often used programs web browsers and word processors, increasing computer boot times and responsiveness. From Wired.com:

Chipmakers and PC manufacturers have been trying to liberate themselves from lengthy startup times for a while, according to Hobbs, but the experience has been “controlled up in Seattle.” Indeed, Hobbs says Microsoft regards HyperSpace as “outside their sphere of influence,” and is not too happy with Phoenix’s offering, which adds yet another voice to the already loud chorus of voices complaining about operating-system bloat. Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York

The Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York exhibit opens at the Municipal Art Society in NYC.

As an exhibition opening today at the Municipal Art Society reminds us, Jane Jacobs did not believe that planners could ever restore life to American cities. Instead she put her faith in the chaos of urban life, in diversity, in people — the grocery store owner, the young mother, the child playing in the street, the watchful busybodies leaning out of windows. Cities were at their best, she wrote, when the “ballet of the sidewalks” was evident, a dance that was intrinsically “spontaneous and untidy.” Her prescription was simply not to get in its way.
